The editor of All Pot Is Local believes that the Pot in the United State will remain Local due to the vast regional differences, the pot may organically grow without much fanfare like we’ve seen in states like Oklahoma, where the industry has grown rapidly over the last 4 years. The majority of blue states and DC, where medical and/or recreational pot is legal, have seen a significant growth in consumption over the years, however, Federally Legal Pot remains years away!
President Biden said he would pardon federal cannabis offenses and order a review of how the drug is classified. This isn’t likely to lead directly to the end of federal marijuana prohibition, but might set the country on the road to further reforms that could benefit U.S. pot growers, who operate in a weird legal limbo. Today, they aren’t allowed to make deductions for normal business expenses so effective tax rates can be as high as 70%. They are also largely barred from accessing many financial services, something that a bill called the SAFE Banking Act proposes to fix.
U.S. pot companies do have an efficiency edge over their Canadian neighbors. As they aren’t allowed to list on American stock exchanges, they have learned to be disciplined with cash. Several names including Green Thumb Industries are already profitable, while no major Canadian player is generating positive cash flow yet, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Though the market may remain segmented and cannabis growers may not be able to harvest the benefits of scale in the foreseeable future, however, the large Cannabis markets like NY/NJ and CA are now larger than the Canadian Pot Market, and the companies that are operating in these states are quietly harvesting greenbacks by the bushels, which are legal tender everywhere!
