California Nuclear Plant Gets Last-Minute Reprieve
State legislature passes bill backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that would keep Diablo Canyon plant operating another five years
California lawmakers voted Thursday to keep the state’s last nuclear plant online in a bid to ease anticipated electricity supply shortages as the state pushes to add more renewable power and decarbonize its grid.
The bill, overwhelmingly approved by lawmakers, would provide a $1.4 billion loan to keep the plant, known as Diablo Canyon, operating another five years to 2030.
In addition, the Biden administration allocated $6 billion to rescue nuclear power plants at risk of closing, citing the need to continue nuclear energy as a carbon-free source of power.

Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck says Germany may keep two of its three remaining nuclear reactors running until next spring if the country needs the power, which it almost certainly will.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on unveiled plans to return nuclear energy to a central place in the country’s electric grid.
Tokyo will aim to bring seven reactors back into service, for a total of 17, and will invest in developing and installing next-generation reactors. Nuclear plants generated about a third of the country’s electricity 20 years ago, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, but that has fallen to 7.2%. Most of the country’s 33 operational reactors have been offline for years undergoing safety checks.
