The drug overdose death data released by the CDC are staggering (70,273) people dead.
The Top Five States with the highest rates of death were, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia and Kentucky.
Appalled by the number of deaths Universities, Museums distancing themselves and in some cases refusing the tainted money from the family of OxyContin manufacturer.
OxyContin is made by a private company, Purdue Pharma, owned by a very, very rich Sackler family, they made their money by marketing OxyContin as the leading pain killer in America. Addictive properties of OxyContin were known to the insiders, and to the Doctors who were prescribing OxyContin to their patients for years.
Death came close to home
A large hedge fund, suddenly saw red instead of the usual green, opioids don't descrimnate, a young man very close to the management died of drug overdose. Overpowered by the guilt and remorse, the money manager decided to return $100s of millions of Sackler family money they managed for decades.
And more recently, the London’s National Portrait Gallery refused a multi-million dollar donation from the Sackler family. The Tate Museum in London and Guggenheim in New York also refused donations.
Lobbying, donations to corrupt politicians and charitable organizations, and huge marketing budget made OxyContin a $2 billion dollar/year drug for decades.
The Oklahoma Settlement
The Sackler family and Perdue Pharma were scheduled to appear in court, it was supposed to be the first of many court battles the company now fighting across the country. However, the Sackler family fearing bad publicity and unpredictable jury verdict, decided to settle with the State of Oklahoma and agreed to pay a staggering $270 Million.
The next big one to watch is Massachusetts, the brave Massachusetts AG deserves a huge credit, the first AG in the nation to bring the case against the Sacklers and Purdue.
